NICARAGUA

With a population of 6.5 million, Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere.  The country’s chronic cycle of poverty is linked to consistent political instability and conflict, and high levels of inequality between urban and rural populations. Despite some progress over the last few decades, Nicaragua is still one of Latin America’s least developed countries, where for many, access to basic services is a daily challenge.

In 2017, The Waterbearers travel team brought 48 filters to two schools and rural communities in Chinandega. Partnering with Waves For Hope organization we installed a water filter system in each school, benefitting up to 300 children with access to clean water. We also provided filters to several homes in the area that were relying on contaminated wells as their source of water.

In Managua, we partner with the Fyera Foundation’s Sunflower Kids, an after-school program dedicated to keeping kids off the streets by facilitating activities such as music and dance instruction and helping to foster a sense of belonging within the community.

2018 – The violent political unrest that broke out in 2018 has prevented The Waterbearers from returning to continue our work. However, through Fyera and our World Water Day campaigns, we have been able to provide water and food rations to 253 families in remote rural areas.

RELIEF EFFORTS Nov 2020, Hurricanes Iota and Eta devastated Central America leaving much of the region without access to safe drinking water. Relief efforts have begun as we shipped the first 100 filters. Particularly hard-hit was Nicaragua, where 60,000 people have been displaced.
