Working Towards Global Goals to Change the World

How does The Waterbearers work to achieve a better and more sustainable future for our world?

In 2015, the global community, led by the United Nations, committed to achieving a better and more sustainable future for all through a focus on 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals. One of the goals, Goal 6, directly aligns with the mission of The Waterbearers as it aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all.

But there is more depth to Goal 6 than what appears on the surface. Indeed, water issues run through and connect almost all of the 17 goals, many of which cannot be achieved without Goal 6. Because global water resources profoundly impact environmental, social, and economic sustainability, the United Nations has declared in 2018 the start of a Water Action Decade where the focus of the organizations turns to water issues.

We hope you will partner with us to reach our action goals of bringing clean water systems to those in need. Donate to The Waterbearers. Hover over the icons to learn how The Waterbearers’ work directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Clean Water

Ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all is integral for achieving many other goals.

  • No Poverty

Healthy communities can spend more time and effort on livelihood activities to help lift them out of poverty.

  • Zero hunger

When women don’t have to spend hours a day fetching water, they can spend more time growing food for their families and increasing crop yields.

  • Good Health

More than 5 million people die each year from diseases caused by unsafe drinking water, lack of sanitation, and insufficient water for hygiene.

  • Quality education

Having easy access to clean water in a community means girls have more time to attend school.

  • Gender equality

Women and girls are primarily responsible for gathering water in 80% of communities that lack reliable water sources at home. Access to clean water allows this time to be redistributed for education, work, and personal development.

  • Decent work and economic growth

Access to clean water reduces the amount of time needed to gather water so people can grow food, pursue an education, and engage in paid work, helping communities lower poverty rates and boost economic growth.

  • Peace and Justice

Many of today’s global conflicts arise from disputes over access to sources of clean water.

  • Partnerships

The Waterbearers relies on strategic partnerships in over 20 countries to achieve its mission and strengthen that of our partners.
