Lack of potable water has the greatest impact on the world’s poor. In the Amazon rainforest, marginalized Indigenous peoples have little or no access to education or healthcare and subsist on less than $1 a day, making them particularly vulnerable to the consequences of illness. Providing communities access to clean water will reduce these risks and allow them to live healthier lives.

The Amazon Clean Water & Nutrition initiative is a collaborative pilot project between The Waterbearers and Edesia Nutrition to save children’s lives and improve the health of the Indigenous peoples of the Ecuadorian Amazon.

While malnutrition cannot be considered a waterborne disease, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 50% of undernutrition is associated with repeated diarrhea of intestinal worm infections from unsafe water or poor sanitation or hygiene.

Water, Disease & Malnutrition

Ecuador has the second-highest level of chronic childhood malnutrition in Latin America. Our primary focus is on the Indigenous Achuar and Shuar communities living in Morona Santiago. Located near the Peruvian border, Taisha has the country’s highest childhood (chronic and acute) malnutrition rate at 47%.

Monica Ayala Cruz, District Health Director for Taisha and our implementation partner, notes that “Clean water would significantly impact the reduction of parasitosis. It would reduce diarrheal diseases, one of the main causes of community morbidity and mortality.”

Edesia Nutrition is a non-profit social enterprise that makes life-saving ready-to-use therapeutic foods to help end the global hunger and malnutrition crisis. Since 2010, partnerships with UNICEF, the World Food Program, USAID/USDA, and others have nourished over 16 million children across 62 countries. www.edesianutrition.org

Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is a life-saving peanut-based paste made from milk powder, peanuts, soy, oil, sugar, and vitamins and minerals called Plumpy’Nut. It does not require water or refrigeration, can be administered at home and can rehabilitate a child under 5 in just eight weeks.

“Having Plumpy’Nut available would greatly reduce the number of emergency flights to transport patients to and from the hospital and alleviate the high cost of medical care and financial burden on the families.” – Monica Ayala Cruz.

Our goal is to improve the community’s overall health with access to clean drinking water through filtration. The pilot project aims to improve the health outcomes of 300 children under five diagnosed with moderate to acute malnutrition.

For thousands of years, the Amazonian Indigenous peoples have protected the rainforest by respecting the environment, wildlife and nature. Now they need our help!

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the capital of Harare experienced severe water shortages due to recurring droughts and failure to treat the little tap water that was available, forcing residents to collect water from unsafe sources and overcrowded boreholes.

This was the situation when Precious Nyadongo, representing a group of 50 Zimbabwean women called Sister to Sister, reached out to The Waterbearers partner Fyera Foundation seeking funding help to complete a borehole project in her village. Of course, we were thrilled to help and fortunate to have funds available from our World Water Day fundraising campaign that could be allocated to this worthwhile project.

Over 40% of Zimbabwe’s population lives in extreme poverty. Access to safe drinking water and sanitation remains problematic for many of these people, especially those living in rural areas. Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the country experienced severe water shortages due to recurring droughts and failure to treat the little available tap water. It is forcing residents to collect water from unsafe sources and overcrowded boreholes.

Precious Nyadongo represents a group of Zimbabwean women known as Sisters Connected Trust that needed $3800 to complete a borehole in Nketa-9, a rural community near Bulawayo home to 800 people. Coincidentally, the Fyera Foundation had raised $3989 on behalf of The Waterbearers, so we requested the funds be allocated to complete this project. The borehole and water storage tank provides clean water for more than half the community. With regular access to water, women and girls no longer have to walk long distances and stand in long lines for hours to collect water. Precious shared her news with others, like Mavis Nkomo in Seafield, a rural community 120 km away. The Fyera Foundation funded a solar-powered borehole to bring water to 1000 people. The Waterbearers installed a drip irrigation system so the community could grow crops. A few weeks after completing the Seafield installation, Mavis Nkomo, a 73-year-old grandmother and community leader, passed on March 23, 2021, one day after World Water Day.

April 2021. Thanks to donors who supported The Waterbearers’ World Water Day fundraiser on March 22 and to Precious Nyadongo in Zimbabwe, who brought another community in need of clean water to our attention. The Waterbearers installed a third solar-powered borehole in Battlefield, impacting more than 2000 people. Reaching the underground water source is a costly undertaking that most rural communities cannot afford. The drilling machine had to cut through several layers of granite and bedrock to get to the groundwater 140 meters (500 ft) down.

Before the borehole, Sukoluhle, a 35-year-old mother of three, walked 15 km (9 miles) to fetch water from the river. She used to do this twice a day.

The water was unsafe to drink, and people often got sick, and the nearest healthcare center is 20 km away. I am beside myself with joy! Getting water is easy now that I don’t have to walk so far, and I have more time to be with my children. My dream is to empower others, and I want to thank The Waterbearers for helping to make this a reality.

June 2021. The Waterbearers installed two more boreholes in Garamtata and Thula village in Maraposa. These wells eliminate the need for young girls to walk 20 km a day to fetch water and impact the lives of 3600 people. A drip irrigation system has been installed in Thula village as part of our Ripple Effect seed program, yielding ground nuts and kale.

These events are part of The Waterbearers’ Ripple Effect plan to enable communities to become more self-reliant. Sustainable development includes growing nutritious crops for their health and well-being and selling the excess produce to pay for their children’s education. In the past, this would not have been possible for girls as they were charged with walking several miles a day to fetch water. Now that they have wells closer to home, they no longer have to walk long distances and have time to be productive and study.

With over 17.5 million, 25% live on less than $3.20 a day. Its diverse landscape and cultures span the Amazon rainforest, Andes highlands, the Coastal region, and The Galápagos Islands.

Ecuador’s backbone, the Andean highlands, runs from the northern border with Colombia to Peru on the southern border. The capital city of Quito at 9350 feet (2850 meters) was inhabited by Andean Indians and was well established 3000 years before the Incan conquest in 1487. As the Incan civil war continued, the Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1531 – and the rest is history.

The Andes (sierra region) is also home to our organization. As such, we are uniquely positioned to work with the local government. An agreement was made between The Waterbearers and the Prefecture of Azuay, originally under the former Prefect, Yaku Perez.

Thirty-six percent of Ecuador’s population lives in rural areas, and the indigenous people remain the most affected by poverty, have little access to education, clean water, or health care.

During COVID restrictions from 2020 to 2021, 225 filters systems were distributed in 76 communities with the Prefectura del Azuay, directly benefitting 2,484 families who lacked access to safe drinking water.

Further collaboration between the University of Azuay and The Waterbearers was established to help nine rural communities access safe drinking water, which impacted more than 5,000 people. Rural communities face ever-shifting climate changes disrupting water supplies, and the health of children is affected by water pollution from biological, chemical and mining contaminants.

Of the rich cultures in West Africa, the dire cascading consequences of poor education, unsafe water, and inadequate sanitation systems are especially acute in Guinea. The need for education and training is significant, as the challenges for solving these issues are some of the most challenging in all the world.

Guinea is a country of over 11 million inhabitants with 1.9 million living in the capital of Conakry alone. Close to 45% of the population is under the age of 18 years old. Primary education is compulsory for only 8 years, and some girls do not attend at all. Most children do not attend for long or ever go to school. Guinea has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world with less than 30% of adults who are literate in 2003.

Guinea has an abundance of Rivers, however, much of the population does not have access to any adequate domestic water supply point. Conakry, the largest city in Guinea does not even have a municipal Water system, and any infrastructure that did exist is unreliable or broken. 50% of the places with unsafe drinking water once had functioning systems, but they have now fallen apart due to lack of maintenance and funding. Garbage choke the waterways because there is no waste management system; sanitation is not a priority when you are hungry.

Poor sanitation and a lack of safe drinking water take a greater human toll than war, terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction combined, making it the leading cause of disease and death around the world. Waterborne diseases of cholera, diarrhea, schistosomiasis, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever are rampant and the endemic lack of sanitation further supports the vector-borne diseases of malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever. Most of the victims are young children, with the vast majority dying from organisms thriving in Water contaminated by raw sewage and other pollutants.

The Waterbearers introduced our clean water filter systems in September 2020, as the pandemic restrictions and border crossings eased, we were able to provide 20 filters to a small group of partnership leaders and women from 5 communities in Kaloum, Conakry. Filters and training cross the border from Sierra Leone with James Bowen from The Village Link. This is a small beginning, but one which we hope will grow with care. We are excited to develop the kiosk idea, and see this as an opportunity to bring clean water to neighboring communities.

Sierra Leone was officially named a crown colony in 1808, and in 1833 the British Parliament passed the Emancipation Act which abolished slavery. As a result, over 50,000 freed slaves settled in the capital, Freetown, by 1855.

Since gaining independence from the British in 1961, Sierra Leone has experienced many economic, political, and social challenges. A rebel group, the Revolutionary United Front, plotted to overthrow the Government, resulting in a devastating civil war from 1991 to 2002. The extreme brutality of this conflict resulted in over 50,000 casualties and displaced over two million people. However, the most notorious atrocity of the 11-year conflict was the recruitment of 10-14,000 child soldiers between the ages of 8 and 14. Three years after the war ended, Sierra Leone was considered the poorest country in the world, with over 60% of the population living in poverty.

Only 2% of the population has access to clean, readily available drinking water. – CDC (2019)

Like so many places in Africa, the need for clean water is great, but for isolated communities that lack access to clean water, sanitation, or electricity, life is particularly harsh. In Mbondonbur, mothers and children are forced to drink contaminated water from old, rusty pipes, making them ill.

Working to address the issue, The Waterbearers has funded eight Rain Catchment Systems (RCS) in the Baoma Chiefdom in Bo district. Each one is connected to a school or community center where our partner, The Village Link, runs early childhood education and digital training centers. Clean water filters kits are provided for each of these villages and schools to ensure that everyone has easy access to safe drinking water. Thanks to a grant from Rotary International 220 households in Konia now have filters.

The demand for the use of water filters and rain catchment systems in the Boama Chiefdom is on an increase due to the IMPACT it’s creating in the various communities where they have been supplied. It has become customary that these communities no longer drink from the stream as they used to before The Waterbearers supplied water filters and the rain catchment systems. According to the Chief, before this time they used to experience a lot of sickness as a result of drinking water from the stream which caused them to get sick from typhoid, cholera and diarrhea, especially during the rainy season. But since they have started using the filters all of these sicknesses have drastically reduced raising total awareness on the use of the filters and its impacts. – James Bowen TVL (Sep 4, 2021)

FREETOWN MUDSLIDE 2017

Immediately following Sierra Leone’s worst natural disaster, a devastating mudslide in 2017 in Freetown that killed 1141 people and left thousands homeless, The Waterbearers started collaborating with The Village Link (TVL). While Freetown buried its dead and mourned their losses, other threats were lurking. Health officials were particularly concerned about the spread of malaria and water-borne diseases like cholera and typhoid.

Through this partnership with TVL, acting as first responders a WhatsApp group was formed with teams on the ground ready to help with relief efforts. Communicating in real-time across three continents, we were able to share updated information on where victims were being sheltered and what supplies they needed.

Meanwhile, Waterbearer Audrey Kissik had recently couriered filters to neighboring Liberia and arranged for 100 of the filters to be transported to Freetown by a police convoy bearing other relief supplies. This allowed us to set up clean filtered-water stations within 72 hours of the disaster for 3000 displaced survivors housed in relief camps; thereby halting the spread of cholera and typhoid.

DONATE

Sparsely populated, the few hamlets that exist are generally nestled below the snowline at 13,000’ and are difficult and dangerous to access on the winding mountain roads.

The Waterbearers has partnered with the Appu Huayhuash Association to bring clean water filters and instructional demonstrations to 17 communities in the Ancash Andean Region and Lima Province Regions of the Huayhuash range.

According to Florencio Bernabé Gonzales, President of Appu Huayhuash, the water consumed by the inhabitants of these Andean communities is collected from ditches and springs and is not potable. Because animals share these water sources, the water is contaminated with bacteria and parasites, as well as feces, debris, and other impurities.

Some communities consume water directly from these sources without adequate treatment, while others have intermittent chlorination added to their water. However, the chlorination systems are unregulated, and therefore not always safe. Indeed, the Ministry of Health has identified that children in these areas have high incidences of gastrointestinal diseases and parasites, resulting in a high rate of anemia and malnutrition.

The use of Sawyer filters, provided by The Waterbearers, means that safe drinking water is now available for seventeen communities and 30 schools in the Huayhuash region, impacting 8224 men, women, and children.

DONATE NOW

Sixty-nine percent of the population lives on less than $1 a day and the majority of this limited income (63%) is spent on food. The vast majority of Ugandans work small plots of land as subsistence farmers or to cultivate cash crops like coffee and tea. However, most of this land is owned by landlords who seldom reinvest in improving productivity.

John SSentamu, a teacher in Uganda, invited the Waterbearers to visit and help his village celebrate World Water Day. In March 2019, we met John at the Good Shepherd Primary school in Katwadde. John has been able to add classrooms, one at a time, from personally solicited donations, and now 400 children pack this tiny school. Although they have piped water from the local municipality, it is metered and not always available during the day when children are present; furthermore, they don’t have enough money to pay for it!

Three months later in June 2019, The Waterbearers funded a rain catchment system that was installed in Katwadde. The 10,000-liter tank and gutter system was installed by the Ugandan Water Project. This system will provide the school and the community with safe drinking water 30 years or more.

In the village of Kakoni, we accompanied a woman to the well to fetch water. She carried a 5-gallon (20 liters) plastic jerry can, which weighs 40lbs when full. The walk through the bush takes over an hour round trip. On the way, we passed a borehole and a pump, which had long since dried up and was inoperable. Finally, we arrived at a large hand-dug hole in the ground with a rickety ladder leading down the steep bank to the surface of the well. The water, Kakoni’s only source, was a creamy brown color. It was the task of the women to make this journey several times a day and often at dusk without a flashlight. We were told that children no longer accompany their mothers to the well since a small boy fell into the water and drowned.

Currently, a pipeline is being extended approximately 2 kilometers to supply the village with access to municipal water. While 1 kilometer has already been completed, additional funds will enable them to reach the remaining 120 households. The Waterbearers provide the materials and installation, and the villagers excavate the ditches.

In both villages, the women told us that men often prey on young girls while they fetch water. It is not only important to have safe water, but also that women and girls are safe. The Waterbearers donated solar lanterns as a layer of protection they wouldn’t normally have.

The results were overwhelmingly favorable for our water filter systems. Although the women and children still need to walk long distances for water, the time spent in gathering firewood has been reduced since the water is filtered instead of boiled over a fire. In addition, The Waterbearers have been able to provide filters to other communities in Uganda and Kenya through connections with other US non-profit organizations such as Confidence Eliminates Bullying (CEB), and 100 Humanitarians.

DONATE

One-quarter of the population lives below the poverty line, on a mere 50 cents per day, making it one of the poorest countries in the world. According to UNICEF, 3.5 million do not have access to basic water services, and 10.8 million lack access to improved sanitation.

Women and young girls travel for hours each day to access water. This often puts them at risk of being trafficked and prevents the girls from attending school.

Since 2017, The Waterbearers have responded annually by providing filters and solar lanterns along with education on water and hygiene to those evacuated during flooding and living in the low lands. Most of Nepal’s rainfall comes during the monsoon season, typically lasting from June to September, when millions of people across Nepal, India, and Bangladesh are displaced. In the lowlands of southern Nepal, the relentless monsoon rains can claim hundreds of lives.

In October 2018, eight members of The Waterbearers travel team arrived in Kathmandu to make the arduous week-long journey to reach populations in need of clean water.

In Kathmandu, they visited the Tamang community of Dkoshan; a high-school in the Mithila Bihari Municipality of Janakpur; and the slum settlement in Pokhara, home to 103 households and an orphanage and study center, New Hope Charitable Children’s Home (NHCCH). The Waterbearers, TWIMCF, and NHCCH agreed to provide the study center with a new water system using bio-sand filter technology and UV light, plus 100 Sawyers filters. This system was completed in March 2019.

In August 2019, Jane Brinton, Executive Director of The Waterbearers and Priyasha Maharjan, Director of the Janata Clinic and Samartha Nepal traveled to Birgunj on the border of Nepal and India, to one of the areas most affected from the recent monsoon. One hundred emergency supply bags that included blankets, toiletries, medical supplies, personal hygiene kits for women, Sawyer filters, and LuminAid solar lanterns were distributed to those displaced. Shadman Gaam and the people of Kandahar, Afghanistan also provided funds to aid in this relief effort.

Home to four million people, Liberia was the fastest developing nation on the continent until civil war broke out in 1989, after 100 years of peace. During the fifteen-year civil war, child soldiers as young as six were forced to leave their families and fight, schools were closed and there were food shortages. Important infrastructure such as electrical grids and modern water plants were destroyed. Almost two decades later, water still does not flow to all of its inhabitants, and in the capital of Monrovia, home to over one million people, many of the wells are contaminated.

The Waterbearers co-founder Spryte Loriano was living in Monrovia, Liberia when the 2014 Ebola outbreak forced her to return to the United States. However, she remained passionate about the country, and its people, and became an advocate for clean water rights, and the empowerment of young girls.

In January 2017, Spryte and The Waterbearers Travel Team flew to Liberia to provide assistance to several rural villages whose only water sources were creeks contaminated with bacteria. The 26 filters the team distributed have improved the lives of 513 villagers, including 175 school-aged children.

During this trip, the team collaborated with an all-girls school in Monrovia to launch a clean water program for the West Point slum area, home to 75,000 people. This project empowered the students and teachers to serve their own community by providing access to clean water.

In August 2017, another Waterbearers volunteer offered to further our Liberia efforts by transporting 200 filters to the country. However, upon her arrival, a devastating mudslide in neighboring Sierra Leone killed 1141 people and left thousands homeless. She quickly made arrangements for 100 of the filters to be diverted to the emergency efforts in Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown.

In 2018, The Waterbearers returned to Liberia to assist with the West Point slum clean water distribution, and distribute 100 filters to carry out additional training and follow up assessments at two other schools: the Becky Primary School (600 students), and the Butterfly Early Learning Center.

DONATE

Years of civil war, persecution, and poverty have led thousands of Burmese refugees to settle in the Mae Sot area in search of safety, peace, and a better future for their families. Mae Sot’s politically and economically strategic location makes it an important hub for providing services to refugees and a center for advocacy and political action.

Although Thailand provides opportunities that are not available in Myanmar, life for refugees and migrants on the border is often very difficult. Low wages, exploitation, child labor, human trafficking, and obstacles to obtaining legal identification result in a lack of financial and personal security. The estimated 20,000 Burmese children living in the area make up a particularly vulnerable population.

Between December 2017 and June 2018, The Waterbearers traveled to Mae Sot to assess community needs and deliver water filters in eleven different locations; a community and two schools in rural Pho Phra, three Burmese refugee schools in Mae Sot, and five monastic schools in Myanmar.

In 2020-2021, during the global pandemic, filter distributions and training continue in Mae Sot with our new in-country partner, The Charis Project (known as Shade Tree Foundation in Thailand). More than 300 children and adults in five communities now have the tools to turn dirty water into clean drinking water.

Thanks to The Waterbearers we can provide the simplest water filtering system that would promote health for children and families in Mae Sot, which is so important especially for families living on the border with Myanmar.

– Aaron Blue, Director of The Charis Project.
